Choosing the right time to visit makes a huge difference to your experience. Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand and has two distinct seasons: dry and wet.

Expert tip: March and April are the sweet spot — beautiful weather, fewer crowds than December–February, and prices slightly lower. Our apartments often have availability at this time. Book early if you're visiting over Christmas or New Year.
During the wet season (July–October), most ferries to An Thoi Islands are cancelled due to waves. However, prices drop 30–40% and you'll have the beaches mostly to yourself. If budget is the priority and perfect seas aren't essential, shoulder season still has plenty to offer.
Good to know: Even in the rainy season, showers are typically short tropical downpours lasting 1–2 hours. All-day rain is rare even in October. Most mornings start bright and sunny, with showers usually arriving in the afternoon.
How to Get to Phu Quoc: Flights & Ferry
Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) is well-connected and easy to reach from across Asia and beyond.
By Plane
Domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City take just 1 hour, and from Hanoi about 2 hours. Airlines include Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways. International connections operate from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Doha and several Chinese cities. From Europe or North America, the most common routing is through Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.
Important: Book flights 2–4 months ahead for peak season (December–January). Prices can double close to Christmas and New Year. Use Google Flights or Skyscanner to compare all routing options and find the best fares.
By High-Speed Ferry
If you're already in southern Vietnam, the ferry is a scenic and affordable option. From Ha Tien: 1 hour ($12–15). From Rach Gia: 2.5 hours ($15–18). Ferry companies: Superdong, Phu Quoc Express. Ferries operate during the dry season only — services are cancelled in rough weather.
From the Airport to Your Accommodation
Phu Quoc Airport is 10 km from Duong Dong town. Your options:
Grab app — $5–8, fixed price, the most convenient option
Official metered taxi — $10–15, available outside arrivals
Pre-arranged apartment transfer — $12–15, met at arrivals with your name on a sign
Recommendation: Avoid touts who approach you inside the terminal offering rides — prices are inflated. Use Grab or book a transfer in advance. WhatsApp us and we'll arrange a meet-and-greet with a welcome sign.
Where to Stay: Apartments vs Hotels
Phu Quoc has everything from backpacker hostels to 5-star beach resorts. But more and more visitors — especially families and digital nomads — choose apartments for their superior value and home-like comfort.

Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the only official currency. In 2025: 1 USD ≈ 25,000 VND. A handy mental shortcut: drop four zeros to get the approximate dollar value (e.g., 200,000 VND ≈ $8).
Pro tip: Best exchange rates are at banks or dedicated money changers in Duong Dong town — not at the airport or in hotels. The difference can be 3–5%. Look for signs reading "Đổi ngoại tệ" (foreign exchange).
ATMs on Phu Quoc
ATMs are widely available — at the airport, shopping centres, near beaches and throughout the main town. Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Fees: $1–3 per withdrawal (ATM fee) plus your bank's foreign transaction fee. Withdraw larger amounts at once to minimise charges. Agribank and Vietcombank ATMs tend to have the lowest fees.

Warning: Avoid paying in USD at local markets — sellers typically offer 20,000–22,000 VND per dollar instead of the real rate of ~25,000. Always pay in Vietnamese Dong for fair pricing.
Getting Around the Island: All Transport Options
Phu Quoc is a compact island (574 km²) but without your own transport you'll feel limited. There is no public bus system. Here are all your options:
🛵
Scooter rental
$5–7/day. The best option. Automatic gears, helmet included. Total freedom to explore.
📱
Grab (ride-hailing app)
~$0.50/km, fixed upfront price. Download before arriving. Needs a local SIM or international card.
🚕
Taxi
$0.80–1/km. Reputable companies: Mai Linh, Vinasun. Always insist on the meter being turned on.
🚗
Car rental
$30–50/day. International driving licence required. Best for families or large groups.
Scooter rental — important: Never leave your passport as a deposit (it's illegal). Offer a cash deposit ($50–100) or a photo of your ID page. Always wear your helmet — fines for foreigners are $10–20, but more importantly, it's your life.
With a rented scooter, you can reach the most remote beaches from Duong Dong in 30–40 minutes. Roads are in good condition and traffic is calm compared to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Petrol costs about $1.50 per litre and a full tank lasts all day.
Phu Quoc offers far more than sunbathing. Here's what to prioritise on your first visit.
Best Beaches
Long Beach (Bai Truong) — 20 km of palm-lined beach. Famous for jaw-dropping sunsets. The island's main strip.
Sao Beach (Bai Sao) — blindingly white sand, turquoise water. The best beach for swimming.
Ong Lang Beach — quiet, rocky coves, no crowds. Perfect for couples and peaceful mornings.
An Thoi Islands — snorkelling and diving among 15 islets with incredible marine life. Dry season only.
Must-Visit Attractions
Duong Dong Night Market — freshly grilled seafood, tropical fruits, local snacks and souvenirs. Every evening 5–10 pm.
Grand World Phu Quoc — vast entertainment complex with Venice-style canals, light shows and international cuisine. Free entry to the grounds.
VinWonders — massive theme park including a spectacular water park. The top family attraction on the island.
Phu Quoc Prison Museum — sobering historical site from the Vietnam War era. Thought-provoking and free to enter.
Orchid Garden (Vuon Lan) — over 3,000 orchid species in a beautiful tropical garden.
Northern Forest Reserve (Bắc Đảo) — pristine jungle, hiking trails and a small waterfall.
Don't miss — every single evening: Sunset on the western coast. Between 5:30 and 6:30 pm, the sky over the Gulf of Thailand turns extraordinary shades of orange, pink and red. Best spots: a beach bar on Long Beach or the viewpoint near Sunset Town. Completely free and unmissable.
Phu Quoc is one of the safest tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. Violent crime is extremely rare and locals are genuinely warm and welcoming. But every first-timer should know these points.
5 Most Common First-Timer Mistakes
1. Riding without a helmet. Police do stop tourists and issue fines of $10–20. Beyond the fine, it's a genuine safety risk. Always wear the helmet that comes with your scooter rental.
2. Leaving valuables unattended on the beach. Petty beach theft is rare but does happen. Keep your passport and bulk of your cash in the apartment safe. Take only what you need for the day.
3. Riding a scooter in heavy rain. Roads get very slippery during tropical downpours. Either wait it out (usually 30–60 minutes) or ride at half your normal speed with extreme caution.
4. Underestimating the tropical sun. The equatorial sun can cause serious burns in just 20–30 minutes. Apply SPF 50+ generously and reapply every 2 hours — especially after swimming.
5. Overpaying for an airport taxi. Touts near the exit quote $20–30 for a 10-km ride that costs $5–8 via Grab. Use the app or pre-arrange a transfer before you land.
Healthcare & Pharmacies
Phu Quoc has hospitals and numerous pharmacies. For serious medical needs, Vinmec International Hospital in Duong Dong has English-speaking doctors. Pack a basic first aid kit: paracetamol, antihistamines, activated charcoal, antiseptic, plasters and high-SPF sunscreen. Insect repellent is also recommended, especially for evenings near vegetation.
Phu Quoc is significantly more affordable than comparable beach destinations in Europe, Australia or the Caribbean. Here are realistic 2025 prices to help you plan.

$280 for two people over 5 days
Studio apartment 5 nights: $75 · Food (cafes + night market): $70 · Scooter rental: $35 · Snorkelling day trip: $50 · Misc (drinks, souvenirs): $50
Best ways to save money: Cook some meals in your apartment kitchen using produce from the local market; rent a scooter instead of using Grab every day; eat pho and rice dishes at local restaurants rather than tourist-facing ones — you'll save 30–40% on your total trip budget.
Most nationalities enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. For longer stays, apply for an e-visa ($25) at evisa.gov.vn at least 3 days before departure. Phu Quoc also has a special 30-day exemption for direct international arrivals. Check your specific nationality's requirements before travelling.
The dry season (November to April) is ideal — sunny skies, calm seas and excellent snorkelling. Peak season (December to February) is busiest and most expensive, so book early. March and April offer great weather with fewer crowds and slightly lower prices. The best value months for first-time visitors.
Phu Quoc Airport (PQC) has direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City (1 hr), Hanoi (2 hrs) and several international cities including Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. From southern Vietnam, take a high-speed ferry from Ha Tien (1 hour, $12–15) or Rach Gia (2.5 hours) during the dry season.
Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the official currency. In 2025: 1 USD ≈ 25,000 VND. Withdraw VND from ATMs (Visa/Mastercard accepted) or exchange at money changers in Duong Dong for the best rates. Bring $100–200 USD cash for your first few days, before you've had a chance to find an ATM.
Yes, Phu Quoc is one of the safest tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. Violent crime is extremely rare. The main risks are traffic accidents (always wear a helmet) and sunburn (always use SPF50+). Don't leave valuables unattended on the beach and you'll have a trouble-free trip.
Renting a scooter ($5–7/day) gives you total freedom and is by far the most popular option. The Grab app works well for individual trips. Taxis are available but pricier at $0.80–1/km. There's no public bus system. With a scooter, you can cross the island from north to south in about 45 minutes.
Apartments offer more space, a full kitchen and better value — especially for families and longer stays. Studios start from $15/night, 1-bedrooms from $25/night. Monthly bookings get 30% off. Hotels suit those who want daily housekeeping and resort pools. For a week or more, an apartment almost always makes more financial sense.
Budget travellers can manage comfortably on $30–40/day per person. Mid-range: $60–100/day. A week for two people in a 1-bedroom apartment, including food, transport and a boat trip, typically costs $500–700 total — significantly less than comparable holidays in Thailand or Bali.
Yes, strongly recommended — especially if you rent a scooter or try water sports. A comprehensive policy covering medical emergencies costs around $30–60/month. Purchase it before departure, as many policies won't cover incidents that occur before the coverage starts.
No — don't drink tap water. Buy bottled water, which costs around $0.30 for 1.5 litres. Ice in restaurants is generally safe as it's commercially produced. Our apartments are equipped with water dispensers, so you won't need to keep buying plastic bottles throughout your stay.
Don't miss: Long Beach, Sao Beach, Duong Dong Night Market, Grand World entertainment complex, VinWonders water park, Phu Quoc Prison Museum, and snorkelling at An Thoi Islands. The sunset from the western coast every evening between 5:30–6:30 pm is breathtaking and completely free.
Yes — buy one at the airport immediately after landing. Viettel and Mobifone have stalls at the arrivals exit. A tourist SIM with unlimited 4G data costs $5–8 for 30 days. You'll need it to use Grab, navigate with Google Maps and stay in touch via WhatsApp. Coverage across the island is excellent.
